IRTG Fall School 2010, Heidelberg, Nov. 2010

From the airport to the main train-station Heidelberg

If you need any assistance in getting from the Airport to Heidelberg, or in any emergency case as far as your participation in the School is concerned, please, call Krzysztof Wisniewski, whose telephone number you should get by email.

IMPORTANT ! Please notice that Monday, 01.11.2010, when you most probably arrive, is a public holiday here. There is no shop openned. The public transport operates like on Sundays. Some restaurants may be closed.

IMPORTANT ! No lunch will be served for you on Monday, before the lectures, and on Friday, after the students seminars. Except this, lunches will be provided.

Lectures and tutorials

The Address of Welcome, the Opening Lectures and the Reception will take place in the building holding the Dekanat of the Faculty of Physics and Astronomy in the Albert-Überle-Str. 3-5. It will start on Monday, the 1st of Nov. at 14:00 in the Fakultätssaal/Festsaal, Room 353, 3rd floor, in the east part of the building. It is advisible to come a few minutes before the Welcome-talk in order to get familiar with the place.

The building in the Albert-Überle-Str. 3-5 is actually located not more than 50 meters away from the probably better known faculty building of the Physics Institute (PI) in the Philosophenweg 12.

The tutorials on Tuesday (morning and afternoon) and on Wednesday (afternoon) will be held in the Kirchhoff-Institut für Physik (KIP), Im Neuenheimer Feld 227, in the Hardware Praktikum, Room 3.201.

From the station to the hotel

Participants from outise Heidelberg are accomodated in the Hotel Kohler, Goethestraße 2, located about 1 km from the Main Train Station (Hauptbahnhof - HBF). One may try to walk from the station to the hotel, but depending on the conditions, it may take 20-30 minutes.

If you decide to take the public transportation, you should go to the tram/bus stop in front of the Main Station. Be carefull to choose the proper stop, marked HBF on the enclosed view.

Becasue of some construction on the way to the center, there is generally a mess concerning trams going from the Main Trainstation to the center. Therefore, instead the tram, you should take a bus which normally stops at the stop Poststr. The right choice is, for example, the bus number 33 or 34 .

IMPORTANT ! Please, buy a ticket from a ticket-machine, located in the tram/bus stop, before you enter any bus or tram, and validate it onboard. Sometimes it is not possible to buy a ticket once you are onboard. You can choose the english language when operating the ticket-machine.

IMPORTANT ! At the moment, the bus-stop Postrstr. is cancelled in the direction to the center, so you have to get off the bus on the auxiliary stop, marked Ersatz Haltestelle on the enclosed view.

Accomodation

Hotel Kohler is located about 1,5 km from the buildings of the Faculty of Physics and Astronomy of the University Heidelberg in the Philosphenweg 12 and in the Albert-Überle-Str. 3-5, where the welcome, the reception, lectures and students' seminars will be held, and about 2.5 km from the Kirchhoff-Institut für Physik, where the tutorials are organized.

You are not supposed to pay the bill in the Hotel. It will go directly to our secretary. It should be enough to show up in the hotel, tell them your name and that you belong to the school organized by the Physics Institute of the University.

From the hotel to the lecture room in the Albert-Überle-Str. 3-5

You can walk from the Hotel to the lecture room in the Albert-Überle-Str. 3-5. It will take you again about 20 minutes.

In case you need to take the public transportation, please go to the auxiliary bus stop , mentioned in the section about arriving in the hotel. Take the bus 34 and get off at the stop Neuenheim/Bergstrasse. There, you are very close to the faculty building in the Albert-Überle-Str. 3-5 .

From the station to the lecture room in the Albert-Überle-Str. 3-5

If you are arriving late on Monday, 01.11.2010, and need to go to the lectures immediately, without passing through the hotel, best would be to take the bus 34 , as descibed in the section about arriving to the hotel, and just to continue your ride up to the stop Neuenheim/Bergstrasse .

From the hotel to the Kirchhof Institute für Physik

This way you will have to take, for example, on Tuesday morning to attend the first tutorial. Go to the bus-stop Poststr., and take the bus 33 or 34 to the Main Trainstation (Hauptbahnhof). There, on the same stop, marked HBF, change to to the tram 24 , going in the direction to Handschuhsheim (actually this is the same direction as your bus was going). Get off the bus at Bunsengymnasium/Mönchhofstr, and walk to KIP.

Others

Here you can find a plan of Heidelberg, on which relevant places are marked again.

Here you can find the page of the public transportation in Heidelberg.

One single ticket with which you can travel one way through whole Heidelberg costs 2,20 Eur. You can buy a block of 5 such tickets at once, and then it will cost you 1,90 Eur per ticket. There is also a single ticket called City, with which you can go, for example, from the trainstation to the hotel or to the Albert-Überle-Str. 3-5 and vice versa. It costs 1,10 Eur. But unfortunatelly, to go to the KIP you already need a normal ticket, the one for 2,20/1,90 Eur.

You can also choose to buy a 24-hours or 3-days ticket for one person, or a group ticket for up to 5 persons, valid for one 1-day.
